Smithfield State High School is located in the beautiful Northern Beaches district of Cairns and is approximately fifteen kilometres from the city centre, and fifty kilometres from Port Douglas.
It is situated on on twelve hectares of tropical grounds, and is less than one kilometre from the beach and rainforest. A pedestrian underpass connects the school to the local campus of James Cook University.
The school is adjacent to the Cairns City Council library and sporting and recreation complex that includes playing fields, a gymnasium and a swimming pool.
There is a regular bus service stopping in front of the school and connecting to the rest of the city of Cairns.
