CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
 


Smithfield State High School's curriculum is an inclusive and extensive range of learning experiences providing opportunities for students to achieve personal success. It is designed to allow students to become active and informed citizens in a global society.
 


Our curriculum incorporates:
  • extensive range of subject offerings with a strong emphasis on high academic standards
  • access for all students to state-of-the-art technology embedded across all subject departments

  • a wide range of extra-curricular programmes and activities

The curriculum structure at Smithfield is broadly divided into two areas: -

Junior School Outline
 
The junior curriculum gives all students exposure to the essential learnings as outlined in each of Education Queensland’s eight Key Learning Areas (link).
 
Key features of our junior curriculum are:
 
  • smooth transition from primary school to Year 8
  • safe and supportive learning environment
  • focus on literacy, numeracy and ICT skills development
  • development of fundamental subject content, pre-requisite knowledge and skills to allow successful transition to the Senior Phase of Learning
  • learning experiences aligned to Smithfield’s Student Outcomes

Senior School
 
The three years of the Senior Phase of Learning allow students to build on pre-requisite knowledge and skills attained in the junior school, so that they can successfully transition to life after school.
 
Our senior curriculum provides a range of pathways allowing access to university studies, other tertiary studies or jobs/careers.
 
 Key features of our senior curriculum are:-
 
  • high academic standards within an extensive curriculum framework
  • optimised O.P. potential through a designated QCS preparation programme
  • career guidance and counselling support
  • individual case management of student progress through networked resources and regular review of Set Plans
  • access to the world of work through structured work experienced programmes, school based traineeships and apprenticeships.
 Year 10
 
Year 10 is a vital educational year for young people. It is the final year of compulsory attendance at school and begins the 3 year Senior Phase of Learning.
Special features of year 10 curriculum include:
  • foundation subject offerings in preparation for Years 11/12
  • extension subjects in English,Maths, Science and ICT
  • structured work experience for all students
  • career planning and subject selection for Yr 11 embedded in Social Science subject
  • compilation of a Senior Education and Training Plan

Year 11 and 12
Smithfield offers two broad pathways in Years 11/12
 
  1. O.P. Pathway – for academic students persuing university careers. We have an extensive list of subject offerings ( link to subjects page) as well as thorough support and monitoring programs to ensure students achieve their best possible results
  2. Vocational Pathway – for students persuing trades, apprecticeships, traineeships and the world of work. Our Senior schooling faculty is available to ensure students are able to best access all the available courses in this stream of schooling. (link to subject offerings)
