Smithfield State High School

Home Economics, at Smithfield State High School, offers subjects in the interest of the wellbeing of people within their personal, family, community and work roles. The subject encourages personal independence, living effectively within the wider society, and promoting preferred futures for self and others in contexts related to food and nutrition, human development and relationships, living environments and textiles.

 

Year 8 ~ Home Economics in Year 8 is an introductory 6 month course covering both food and clothing.

 

Year 9 ~ In Year 9 students have the opportunity to branch in three directions. The student may choose to follow a twelve month course in food studies, or a course in clothing or a combination course of food and clothing.

 

Year 10 ~ In Year 10 students are offered three courses. Introduction to Children’s Services is a popular choice for those students who have an interest in working with children. Introduction to Hospitality aims to teach the tricks and techniques that will give the student a taste of the Hospitality industry.  In Introduction to Home Economics students will exposed to experiences which will develop skills necessary to be successful in Senior Home Economics.

 

Year 11/12 ~ The Senior Home Economics pathway continues in three directions. The students have the opportunity to participate in the Senior Authority subject of Home Economics, Certificate III in Hospitality and/or Certificate III in Children’s Services.

 

In addition to the subjects offered within the Home Economics department, students may have the opportunity to participate in one of the many regional competitions (e.g. Hospitality Awards, Early Childhood Practitioners Awards, Cairns Show). The Home Economics department is also regularly involved in the production of meals and food items for various functions.
