OVERVIEW
Learning an additional language helps you to live and learn as part of our global community. It gives you insights into other cultures, as well as the language and communication skills to interact with members of local and international communities. The ability to speak an additional language can be essential in areas such as tourism and hospitality, business, international relations and diplomacy, education and communications. This ability also opens up opportunities to study abroad, and to travel and live in parts of the world that would not have been possible without the local language.
SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
Year 8 and 9
Students have the choice of studying either German or Indonesian. In Year 8 all students study LOTE for six months. During this time students complete an introductory course to develop skills and vocabulary required for further study in the language chosen. Cultural aspects of the country are also explored. In Year 9 LOTE is an elective. During the course a variety if topics are covered including: daily life, shopping and exchange in either Indonesia or Germany.
Year 10
For Year 10 students wishing to develop their skills in a second language, Indonesian and German are again offered as an elective. During the course a variety if topics are covered including: self, hobbies, interests, travel, health issues and living in the city. There is an emphasis on the students acquiring the skill base required for the study of languages in Year 11 and 12.
Year 11 and 12
For students who have successfully studied Indonesian or German to Year 10 level there is an opportunity to study their chosen language through their senior years.
A further opportunity is provided for students to study a language at senior level by introducing French at Year 11. This course is an accelerated one where students are given extra lesson time to complete Years 8, 9 and 10 in Year 11 and Years 11 and 12 in Year 12. This gives students an opportunity to study a language at Senior level without having completed a course in Junior.
