On Wednesday, 16 May 2018, our Year 11 & 12 Senior Geography classes went on a day long excursion to Green Island.

Early in the morning the classes gathered at the Cairns Esplanade Reef Fleet Terminal to board the ‘Great Adventures’ ferry.

After a choppy, but entertaining boat ride the group arrived at Green Island. We were met by a marine biologist named Dave who took the group on a guided tour around the island and explained how certain plants have adapted to survive the unique island conditions. The afternoon consisted of a guided tour of the back of the island; staff access only. The classes learned and observed the sustainable practises used and developed to minimise the negative impacts of tourism and protect the island unique environment for the future.

Collection of primary data was used to complete a geographical report evaluating and recommending a sustainable management strategy for Green Island.

Overall, all students involved loved exploring the beautiful, tropical and sustainable island!
