Introduction
Using research from Michael Fullan* and the recognised future skillsets required of young learners, Smithfield State High School has established a Literate Graduate Framework to develop lifelong learners, global citizens and successful people. The school will use this framework to explicitly track and develop six identified skillsets and then credential students who reach established standards with a Literate Graduate Certificate.

What is the Literate Graduate Skillset?
The skillsets consist of what are called our '6Cs'. They are:-
- Communication
- Critical Thinking
- Collaboration
- Creativity
- Character
- Citizenship
Each of the 6Cs is underpinned by five to six key characteristics such as, being literate and numerate, being a problem solver, learning from mistakes, integrity and self-worth.
How is it taught?
All faculties include identification of places to explicitly teach the skill set in units of work. Teachers collaboratively plan learning experiences and some are assessing these currently. Students are also able to self-develop their skills through other activities, experiences they undertake (e.g. Duke of Edinburgh, sporting/cultural activities).
How is it assessed?
Students keep a portfolio recording their progress towards the 6Cs. There are two performance levels of attainment - "working towards" and "achieved".
Students must sit an interview with identified educational. university and business panellists who can determine attainment of the Literate Graduate Certificate.
The school is also developing a certificate course as part of compulsory studies for all students:
Certificate I/II Literate Graduate.
How is the standard determined?
An established standard to be a Literate Graduate is being developed with key stakeholders - employers and business representatives, university leaders, school leaders. The standard will be rigorous and agreed to by all stakeholders.
How useful is this Literate Graduate Program?
We believe students will be able to use this certificate and statement of attainment to enhance future employment and educational opportunities.
